“Who Governs and How? The rise of Non-State Actors in India.”- 30th Aug’24

On 30th August 2024, PRAXIS, the Functional Committee of MPPG, hosted an insightful panel discussion entitled “Who Governs and How? The Rise of Non-State Actors in India.” The event featured prominent speakers, including Mr. Gokul Patnaik, IAS (Retd.) and Chairman of Global Agri System Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Sujit Mahapatra, Founder and Secretary of ‘Bakul Foundation’; and Ms. Bhumika Nanda, Senior Consultant at ‘Gram Vikas’.

 

Mr. Patnaik highlighted the evolution of governance, from the concept of ‘Ram Rajya’ to modern nation-states. He discussed the diminishing relevance of the Doctrine of Separation and how non-state influencers, such as social media and Civil Society, impact governance.

 

Mr. Mahapatra emphasized the importance of trust between the government and non-state actors, sharing insights from his work. He also explained the difference between NGOs and NPOs, highlighting their role based on societal needs.

 

Ms. Nanda traced the five-decade history of Gram Vikas, illustrating the rise of non-state actors as a response to governmental gaps. She emphasized their interdependence and collaboration with private and corporate entities to contribute to the welfare state.

 

The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session with students, during which the role of non-state actors in shaping the political, social, and economic landscape of India and beyond was thoroughly discussed.
