MBA-PPM

Two-Year Full-Time MBA Program in Public Policy and Management

Introduction:

Building from the legacy of XIM’s reputed management ecosystem, the School of Governance and Public Affairs (SGPA) offers a unique program – an MBA in Public Policy and Management. The program provides rigorous interdisciplinary learning that bridges management with public policy to fill the rising demand for policy professionals in government and business. The skills and expertise imparted as part of the program are now becoming critical for strategic decision-making and long-term success in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. The problem-solving focus of public policy rooted in a sound knowledge of social, economic, and political issues has become indispensable for navigating regulatory landscapes, influencing policy, managing risks, and aligning with societal expectations.

Besides getting placement opportunities in the corporate sector in general management and consulting, graduates of the program have a strong chance to get placement in niche public policy roles within corporate organizations. The blend of management and public policy education opens opportunities for expert advisory roles for the government and specialist management professionals who can advise companies on public policy. Graduates can pursue careers in various international organizations and government-specialized agencies as consultants and policy analysts/managers. The two-year program, in its entire duration, also creates numerous opportunities for the students to connect with the industry, government, research, and development sector and other potential employers to facilitate their careers.

Academic System:

Program Structure

The MBA program is of 2 years duration, spread over six terms. Students must complete 103 credits to graduate with the degree successfully. One credit is equivalent to 10 teaching/contact (classroom) hours plus another 20 hours of academic work to be utilized outside the classroom in reading, research, assignments, and activities related to the course, as specified by the faculty. The program involves an average of 16 class sessions a week, each of 90 minutes duration. The student’s workload, including class sessions, required readings, term papers, project work, and field visits, is expected to need about 90 hours per week. Most core courses are part of the curriculum in the first year, with some courses allocated in the second year. Electives are offered in the second year.

The pedagogy includes classroom lectures, case-based discussions, and experiential learning to make the students undertake original policy research and analysis and develop transformative solutions for public policy issues through an efficient management orientation. Students also learn by organizing events and conclaves and networking with industry and policy organizations from the government and the private sector.

Program Focus

  1. General Management
  2. Public Systems Management
  3. Public Leadership and Entrepreneurship
  4. International Relations and Global Governance
  5. Politics, Law and Development

Some unique features of the program that go beyond the classroom learning include:

Government Immersion Programme

Students undertake this credited program in December at the end of their 2nd term. It is a unique initiative of the school with the objective of orienting young minds toward the workings and dynamics of the policy planning and implementation process at various levels of the government. Students are generally attached to an institution of the government where policy is planned and/or implemented for 3 weeks. This exposure will provide Management students with a deep understanding of the realities and workings of government bodies, which are important public policy sites. Some students are also attached to the offices and constituencies of Hon’ble Members of Parliament (MP) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLA). This immersion program accounts for 2 credits.

Summer Internship Programme

At the end of the first year, students spend 8-10 weeks interning with various corporate, consulting, research, and governmental organizations in different public policy areas. Students work on ongoing projects and learn current approaches, practices, challenges, and problem-solving processes. The Career Administrative Services (CAS) of the school and the university works to place the students in established organizations for this internship.

Capstone Project (CP)

During the final trimester, students are required to undertake a Capstone Project for 2 credits. Through their chosen project which is a culmination of their two years of study in public policy and management, students demonstrate their expertise in a particular area through their research and project management and execution capabilities. Students are allotted faculty guides to supervise and advise on their research/project.

Immersion Courses

Several immersion courses are held throughout the MBA program. These are short course modules on cutting-edge topics and issues intended to equip the knowledge and skills of the students. Usually conducted over two days, these immersive courses are delivered by invited resource persons who are nationally and globally renowned experts. Students can also propose topics of common interest that give them a competitive edge in the job market.

Career Advisory Services (CAS)

The CAS functions as a full-time career advisory team that consists of student members, faculty coordinators, and officials from the university CAS team. The CAS works for the internships and final placements of all the students. It also holds leadership talks, an annual conclave IMPACT-X, and other networking opportunities that bring potential recruiters and students together.
