On the 6th of November 2023, the XIM University bore witness to the unveiling of ‘Pratha’, a contemporary adaptation echoing the timeless essence of Sophocles’ Antigone. This play organised by the third-year undergraduates as part of their Administrative Ethics and Governance course, seamlessly blended ancient legend with a modern twist. The event was graced by the presence of Fr. Registrar, S. Antony Raj S.J., along with the faculty members from the SGPA and diverse schools, staff, and students of XIM University. The story centered around a farmer’s tragic suicide due to crippling financial debt within a community that deems suicide taboo, denying proper funeral rites to the deceased. In a bold move, the farmer’s sister defies societal norms to pursue social justice on humanitarian grounds, igniting a compelling narrative that questioned traditions and challenged oppression. Through the impeccable performances of the actors from the ‘Abhinaya Club’ and the dedicated endeavors of the students, the audience was captivated by the world of ‘Pratha,’ where convictions clashed, and the pursuit of justice unfolded amidst moral ambiguity.
